In-person attendance

ESCAIDE 2024 will take place at Münchenbryggeriet, the same venue that had already hosted the conference in 2022 and 2019. Located on the island of Södermalm, this conference centre is housed in a historical brick building that previously served as a beer brewery and clothing factory, and today is one of the premier event locations in the Swedish capital. 

We’re excited to be hosted once again by this fantastic venue: it will be the chance for those who have previously attended the conference to revisit familiar sites in Stockholm, and for new attendees to discover the charms of the venue and its remarkable views over the old town. 

All rooms in the conference venue are wheelchair accessible, by elevators and with ramps in some locations. If you have any questions or specific access requirements, please indicate so during the registration process.

Located in central Stockholm, the venue is easily accessible by foot and by public transport. In order to promote more sustainable forms of transportation, we encourage ESCAIDE participants to make use of the city’s excellent public transport network, or other forms of active transportation.

By foot

Stockholm is a walkable and pleasant city for pedestrians. The walk to the venue from the Central train station is about 35 minutes, and passes through some of the most scenic parts of the city, including the historical old town.

The entrance to the venue is located on Torkel Knutssonsgatan, a road which slopes up from the northern shore of the island of Södermalm.

By public transport

The Stockholm public transport network is run by the company SL (Storstockholms Lokaltrafik). 

How to purchase tickets:

• Tickets can be purchased through the app, or directly onboard the bus or at the turnstiles in the metro stations (by swiping your payment card on the green readers). 
• A single ticket costs 42sek and is valid for 75 minutes on multiple modes of transport (bus, metro, ferries and commuter trains Pendeltåg). 
• Multi-day passes (for 1, 3, 7 or 30 days) are also available for purchase.
• Please note that SL, like most of the rest of Sweden, is cashless, and thus only accepts payments by card or phone.

The nearest public transport stops to the conference venue are:

• Metro (T-Bana): Mariatorget, on the red line (lines 13 and 14), located 400m (or a 6-minute walk) from the venue.
• Bus: lines 405, 55, 57, 4, 66 and 74 all have stops within a 5-minute walk from the venue.
• Commuter trains (Pendeltåg): Stockholm South Station (Södra Station) is located 15 minutes away from the venue on foot, and runs regular trains to Stockholm Central Station and other stations on the commuter rail network.

By bike

For avid cyclists who do not shy away from wintery conditions, cycling is one of the best ways to move around Stockholm. Most roads have dedicated cycle lanes, and dedicated areas for parking bikes.

Electric bikes are available for hire through the Ridemovi app. 

By taxi

Many taxi companies operate in Stockholm, and they can be ordered in advance or hailed on the street. Approved taxis with metered fares always bear yellow number plates, but be aware that taxi prices are not regulated in Sweden and may vary greatly. Ride sharing apps such as Uber and Bolt also operate in Stockholm.

By car

If no other alternatives are available, the venue can be reached by car. Parking is allowed along Torkel Knutssonsgatan (approx. 100 parking spaces in both directions), Söder Mälarstrand (approx. 50 parking spaces along the dock) and on nearby streets. By train

Stockholm is accessible by train from many major cities in Scandinavia and Northern Europe, including a night train from Hamburg or Berlin.

By plane

Stockholm’s main internation airport is Arlanda, located about 40km north of the city centre.

Arlanda Airport is linked to the city centre by the Arlanda Express (the priciest but quickest option), or by bus (Flygbussarna and Flixbus). Both options run regular routes throughout the entire day and most of the night. 

Other airports in or around Stockholm include Bromma (for flights within Sweden and to Norway and Finland), and Skavsta (for flights from Belgrade, Bucharest, Tirana, Warsaw and certain airports in Spain).

By boat

Travelling from Finland or Estonia? Consider taking the ferry to central Stockholm. Ferry crossings are operated by Tallink Silja and Viking Line.

Language

The official language of Sweden is Swedish, but Stockholm is very accessible for English-speakers. Most information is available in English, and most locals speak very good English.

Some useful phrases in Swedish might come in handy:

Hej = Hello, hi [pronounced: hey]

Hej då = Goodbye [pronounced: hey daw]

Tack = Thanks

Yes = Ja [pronounced: Ya]

No = Nej [pronounced: Ney]

Ursäkta = Excuse me [pronounced: ur-shaak-ta]

Förlåt = Sorry [pronounced: for-lort]

Weather

Stockholm at the end of November is cold (around 2-6ºC), and there is a high possibility of rain and/or snowfall. Make sure to pack warm clothes, a waterproof outer layer and comfortable shoes.

Currency

The currency of Sweden is the Swedish Crown (krona, abbreviated to SEK or kr). Check the latest exchange rates here.

Safety and security

Stockholm is very safe city for locals and visitors alike, but we advise ESCAIDE participants to remain aware of the possibility of petty crimes such as pickpocketing.
